Shopping for Your Children

You want to steer them in the direction of healthy choices, good style, and a positive self-image. Though your child isn’t shopping for wedding shoes yet, you do want to be actively involved in their clothes selection process, so that they know what’s acceptable and what’s not.
Try to be engaged on a give-and-take basis, discovering what your child or teen wants, and how they want to present themselves. Instead of demanding that they wear certain clothing or expressly discouraging other clothing, try to understand why they make their choices and help them understand why you want them to make certain other choices. This mutual understanding could help you resolve conflicts in the coming years, because you’ll better understand why your child wants to make the choices he or she is making.
Go shopping with your child, and watch and talk as they pick outfits. Be encouraging when they explore new, bold things, and experiment with finding their style. Don’t be the source of shame or embarrassment if they want to adopt fashions that seem unusual or crazy to you. Every child goes through these phases, and even though you don’t want them to blindly go along with the crowd, you don’t want to shame them into passivity, either. Be supportive, be involved, and have fun with it!
